The Catholic parish of Norton St Phiilip was
started in the village in 1913 by Dom Ambrose
Agius as a Mass centre from the newly founded
mission in Radstock. In 1923, a small property
was bought on Bell Hill which consisted of
a house, a paddock and some outhouses. A temporary
church was built on the site with a parish
hall and skittle alley as social amenities.
In 1954, Dom Edmund Lee was appointed Parish
Priest and, as a professionally qualified engineer,
immediately started to produce designs for
a permanent church. With the help of novices
and junior monks from Downside, the new church
was built and opened in 1961. It was dedicated
to Our Lady.
