The Theatre Quad Garden
A beautiful new garden has been designed by David Mlinaric CBE who was in Roberts House between 1953 and 1957. David, famous for his work at Chatsworth and Waddesdon Manor, has softened the concrete landscape that was previously more Grange Hill than Downside and created an outdoor social space popular with pupils and theatre goers alike. In the summer term this area will become the home of outdoor concerts, a piazza for the cafe or just a quiet place to read a book.

A new broadband connection
Thanks to the upgrade of the Midsomer Norton exchange we were finally in a position to install superfast broadband at Downside. Improving our connection from 2 megabits per second to 30 megabits per second this changed our ICT beyond all recognition. New Microsoft Outlook for all users, quicker downloads from the internet and the ability for teachers to use live links to add a new dimension to their lessons. The next step is wireless access to the internet in houses, skype and the ability for pupils to access their school work from their own laptops via the web.

iMacs for Art
The modern art curriculum includes all forms of digital media and Apple Computing is the industry standard for image manipulation. To date Downside has been PC throughout but in 2010 a new suite of iMac computers with all the required hardware and software has dramatically improved our media capability and our thriving Photography Club are also reaping the rewards.

Petre
Library
The collections in the Library have been upgraded with 6000
new books as well as new on-line resources, journals and
periodicals to support the modern curriculum. A collegiate
atmosphere encourages pupils to do independent research in
all subjects from a wide range of resources and the Petre
Library has become a hub of learning in the heart of the
School again.

The restoration
of the Allan Bath
Originally built in 1926 by the Allan Family we are very grateful to 40 key benefactors
who have paid for a substantial part of the restoration. The pool has been closed
since 2006 and we are delighted to see it open again and looking as good as new.
