Debating plays an important part in the intellectual stimulation of Downside pupils. The Sixth Form Abingdon Debating Society, founded in 1859, and the junior Court of Earls meet regularly for internal debates, with the inter-house debating particularly keenly contested, and pupils also participate in a wide number of external competitions, including the English Speaking Union, MUN and Oxford Union debating competitions. Debating is a compulsory carousel activity for the Third Form with its own debating league.
In 2011 Downside was awarded Best Delegation in both the Cheadle Hulme and the Bristol Model United Nations Debating competitions and was Highly Commended at Bath International Schools Model United Nations (BISMUN).
