Learning Support is offered to all pupils at Downside. All Third Form pupils follow a course designed to develop independent study skills and the Tutorial system builds on this foundation for the senior years. Pupils with specific learning difficulties are monitored and receive specialist teaching by the Head of Learning Support and a small team of dedicated teachers. Individual support is arranged at times convenient for the pupils. Study support lessons, particularly in Mathematics and English, are also offered within the timetable, and each Academic Department runs weekly support clinics for all ages. The School arranges diagnostic tests for all junior pupils. English as an Additional Language is also available. There is a charge for all special tuition.
Very able pupils are offered additional teaching to inspire and nourish their enthusiasms and are especially encouraged to attend the Academic Society Meetings.
