The Chapels on the North
side of the Sanctuary and in the Ambulatory were
built before the Choir they surround. They are from
the earlier building phase, to the design of Dunn
and Hansom. Each was conceived independently of the
others and they have distinctive furnishing and decoration.
The saints of their dedication as well as the others
portrayed in them all have connections with Downside,
either with the families of their donors, or with
monastic and local traditions.
The area also contains
a number of notable tombs, including that of Cardinal
Gasquet, who was Prior of Downside before becoming
a Cardinal. He died in 1929. His self-standing tomb
is of Palombino marble and alabaster. It is covered
by an elaborate canopy. The work is all by Sir Giles
Gilbert Scott. |
