St Oliver Plunkett has an
honoured place in Downside Abbey Church, but his shrine
was originally in the former English Benedictine monastery
in Lamspringe, where there is still a devotion to the
Irish martyr. In 2010 they celebrate the 90th birthday
of the start of the processions at Lamspringe, and in
connection with that, a wall painting in the Crypt was
uncovered last year, painted in 1927, which was covered
over during the Nazi times in 1938. In a simple style
of folk piety it depicts the martyr kneeling on the gallows
at Tyburn. |
