ST OLIVER

St Oliver Plunkett has an honoured place in Downside Abbey Church, but his shrine was originally in the former English Benedictine monastery in Lamspringe, where there is still a devotion to the Irish martyr. In 2010 they celebrate the 90th birthday of the start of the processions at Lamspringe, and in connection with that, a wall painting in the Crypt was uncovered last year, painted in 1927, which was covered over during the Nazi times in 1938. In a simple style of folk piety it depicts the martyr kneeling on the gallows at Tyburn.

When the monastery was closed in the 19th Century the shrine was moved to Downside. The third photograph shows the casket in which his relics were formerly preserved.

We are grateful to Mr Axel Kronenburg for sending the second image.
