The community welcomed five
young men to Downside for the latest monastic experience
retreat. The diverse group was given a series of talks
by Dom David based on the premise that our lives are
essentially journeys towards a loving God. As well
as hopefully being on the receiving end of some monastic
wisdom, our guests joined the community in choir to
pray the Divine Office, participating fully in the
Downside horarium. The weekend ended informally when
the Abbot invited our guests to have coffee with the
community at ‘recreation’. We enjoyed welcoming some
new faces to Downside and will keep all those who attended
the weekend in our prayers.
Our monastic experience
retreats are designed for young men interested in experiencing
the monastic life at Downside ‘from the inside’. Though
they are not always discerning a religious vocation,
the men we welcome find that the environment of prayerful
silence at Downside grants them the opportunity to
spend time listening to God. The next monastic experience
weekend will be from the 25th – 27th of September.
