St John Roberts was one
of the founding community of St Gregory’s, Douai, made
by monks who had entered monasteries in Spain. But
he was born in Snowdonia, in Trawsfynydd, in 1577,
in the Diocese of Wrexham, where he is also honoured
as a martyr. He was killed at Tyburn on 10th December
1610.
To mark the 400th anniversary
of his martyrdom, the Bishop of Wrexham, Rt Revd Edwin
Regan, launched the year of celebrations with a pilgrimage
to the place of this birth and the church of his baptism.
The walk started at Cymer Abbey outside Dolgellau and
followed woodland paths for about 15 miles.
The Bishop
is a hardened pilgrim, having walked to Compostella.
This pilgrimage which brought together about 100 pilgrims
of all ages was joined by Abbot Aidan and the Downside
Novitiate.
