Father Laurence was an
inspiring monk, and a much-loved confessor to many
members of the community. He was resolute and determined
in everything, and in spite of his blindness let virtually
nothing stop him living monastic life to the full.
The most amazing thing for someone meeting him for
the first time was the total confidence with which
he knew his way around the rooms and buildings at Downside,
rarely needing any assistance. Perhaps the most beautiful
thing was to see him slowly and prayerfully reading
the Bible in Braille.
He had been
Oblate master for many years before retiring early
this year. Before that he had been Novice Master and
House Master of Ramsay house as well as School Chaplain
and Head of R.S. He had a deep love of theatre and
of Shakespeare in particular.
His funeral will be at
Downside Abbey on 10th September at 2.00 p.m.
May he
rest in peace.
