Downside Abbey and Wells
Cathedral are the two largest churches on the Mendips.
Ever since the community moved to Downside in 1814,
the two churches have enjoyed close fraternal relations.
In a remarkable display of Christian charity the collective
memory of the community will never forget, Wells Cathedral
provided a choir for the newly arrived monks at Downside
during a time and in an area redolent with anti-Catholic
sentiment.
Continuing the theme of
mutual hospitality in his address to the community,
the Dean of Wells suggested ways in which Downside
and Wells Cathedral might be able to continue working
together in the future. What seems important now is
focussing on what we share, and our ability to work
together, so that we can act as common witnesses to
Christianity in an age of general Christian decline
in Britain.
We look forward to continuing
this discussion and keep the Cathedral Chapter of Wells
in our prayers.
