Brother Sergi D’Assís is
responsible for the boarding side of the Escolania at the monastery of Montserrat
in Catalonia. Montserrat is a great pilgrimage
centre because of its ‘Black Madonna’ and was an important
place in the life of St Ignatius of Loyola, the founder
of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Montserrat also
has a famous Escolania, or choir school. Sra Pilar,
a lay house mother at the choir school, accompanied
Brother Sergi on a fact-finding visit to Downside.
They were mainly interested in how Downside School
manages to achieve balance in the life of its students
with regards to pastoral life and especially games.
The
Abbot of Downside shared an article of his on Benedictine
Education with and our visitors presented the community
with a CD of music from their choir school.
We are
grateful for the links between our two communities
and the important work of Benedictine education.
