Caving, horse riding, bike
rides through the Mendip countryside and a brief encounter
with the friendly ghosts in the forest around Downside
were just some of the highlights from this year’s successful
summer camp.
The Downside-Fisher Youth
Club has evolved since it was founded by the Downside
monk Dom Stephen Rawlinson and alumni from Downside
school a century ago as a Catholic boys club in South
East London. The present-day club in Bermondsey is
impressive, and provides extraordinary facilities and
opportunities for young people who might otherwise
be socially excluded. It helps maintain its Catholic
ethos by its links to our monastery and by its having
as patron the Most Reverend the Archbishop of Southwark.
The annual summer camp at the more rural Downside has
become a major fixture in the club’s year and the monastic
community, as well as ex-pupils and parents of students
in our school were delighted to welcome our important
guests.
On the 26th of August a
group led by Joey Holmes, Downside Fisher’s Outdoor
Educator, did a sponsored cycle from Downside (Somerset)
to Downside (Bermondsey) raising thousands for the
club!
