a long tradition of historical research and the
great monastic historians, Cardinal Gasquet and
Dom David Knowles were members of the community.
Downside
Abbey remains a centre of historical research
with its extensive archive and library at its
heart.
Abbot Aidan Bellenger,
who is Director of Historical Research at the
Abbey and Dr. Simon P. Johnson, who is Associate
Director, are responsible for the Abbey’s historical
research.
