STRATTON-ON-THE-FOSSE PARISH

Church of St Benedict
Stratton-on-the-Fosse is our oldest local parish. The mission established in 1814 has Baptismal registers dating back to 1818. The present church and parish centre were built to the designs of Charles Hansom and completed in 1857. It was extended in 1913 when the present spire was built. Its interior, which reflected the tastes of the longest serving parish priest, Dom Ethelbert Horne, was for the first half of the 20th Century an exuberant Mediaevalist experience complete with Rood Screen. Dom Ethelbert served Stratton for fifty years and other parish priests included the first two Archbishops of Sydney, Dom Bede Polding and Dom Bede Vaughan, as well as Dom Gregory Murray whose post-Vatican II taste produced the present liturgical arrangements. Baron Friedrich von Hugel (1852-1925) is buried in the extensive Churchyard.
