Church of Saint
Cuthbert
The Catholic parish of Holcombe was started as a
Mass centre in 1925 by Dom Leander Donovan. Major
and Mrs Leadbitter, who were living at Flint House,
provided a room for the chapel in the house. Eventually
there were too many people coming into the House,
so the Leadbitters offered an eighteenth centruy
coach house to be the Chapel. It was dedicated
to St Cuthbert, as the Leadbitters had originally
come from Durham after the First World War. There
is a very fine stained glass window dedicated to
St Cuthbert, and an unusual carved oak screen,
which adds to the intimate and devotional interior
of the Chapel.
